From Women’s Health contributor and yoga expert Kathryn Budig-the essential, authoritative guide to yoga, for beginners and beyond.
Approximately 16 millions Americans now practice yoga on a regular basis. Devotees can’t rave enough about this ancient art of meditation, breathing, and physical postures that calms the mind and slims the body.
Unlike fitness fads, yoga is worth the hype. The postures stretch and tone lean muscle mass and sculpt a strong and slender physique-burning up to 400 calories in a 90-minute session. But yoga does something even better. It’s proven to reduce the biggest cause of weight gain-stress-which 43% of Americans say makes them overeat.
This definitive volume features:
– every essential pose to help readers lose weight and transform their bodies
– Total Body Yoga: targeted workouts in 15 minutes or less
– core-strengthening routines for hotter, more satisfying sex
– a healthy, mindful eating plan centered around calming, cleansing foods
Covering everything from basic postures to relaxation techniques to avoiding common injuries, The Women’s Health Big Book of Yoga is the only guide readers need to achieve their fittest, healthiest, happiest selves.

Wonderful Yoga Encyclopedia
I just got this book today, so I haven’t had a chance to go through every single page, but I am so impressed! It includes:
* a brief overview of the history of yoga
* language of yoga
* benefits of yoga
* answers to common questions on yoga
* touches on some of the deeper spiritual aspects of yoga (enough to give a taste of it, but not to overwhelm)
* how yoga keeps you fit
* conscious eating and even includes a sample meal plan with a few recipes!
That’s just the first 40 pages 🙂 THEN the book goes onto:
* a thorough break down of every essential yoga pose with beautiful photographic spreads that have anatomical cues
* fun 15 minute sequences you can do at home to target different parts of the body (ie.legs, arms, butt, etc…), special health-focused sequences (ie. pms, hangover, carpal tunnel, back pain, etc…), performance sequences (ie. basketball, golf, climbing, etc.), emotional health (ie. anxiety, relaxation, broken heart, etc…) and much MORE!
I am a yoga teacher and I would recommend this to any student seeking to perfect their asanas and gain a general understanding of yogic philosophy. However, if you’re looking to get deep into the philosophy of yoga, this would not be the book I recommend. There are many other yoga books on anatomy and philosophy. However, I found this book to be very user friendly and well thought out guide to deepening your yogic practice! I believe that every yogi and/or yogini would benefit from having this book in their library.

Great Book from an Engaging Instructor
This is absolutely one of my favorite Yoga overview books. And I have read a lot of them!
Kathryn Budig happens to be one of my FAVORITE instructors. I have taken dozens of classes from her on YogaGlo. She has a bright, engaging and fun personality. Her classes are challenging! But she approaches them in such a way that it all seems possible if you’re willing to take it at your own pace.
Now onto the book, Kathryn Budig gives an introduction on the history of yoga which is approachable. A lot of the terms can be hard to grasp but she teaches you about them in a relatable way. She talks about the different types, what you might need to start a practice and why it’s good for you. She answers many of the most asked questions by new yoga students.
She gives a chapter on mindful eating and a three day cleanse. Very worth it and not filled with crazy ingredients. Most ingredients you can find at major grocery stores.
She walks readers through many of the essential poses and sequences in a very readable way with excellent cues. She then goes onto give readers a large number of sequences geared towards a specific improvement you’d like to see. She does Total Body, Yoga for Health, Yoga for Athletes, Yoga and your hormones, Yoga for Moms, Yoga for Sex and Yoga for life.
If you are a new student, or even a seasoned yogi I can’t recommend this book highly enough. It never hurts to get back to the basics.

A wonderful book for the modern yogi!
This book could be an introduction to yoga or an addition to any growing yoga book collection. It’s fun and modern. Kathryn really shows her funny and sweet personality in this book also sharing her story and philosophy!
It starts with an introduction of what yoga means and how it all started, while providing you with a some insight on some terms and story behind it all.
Then is has a 7 day meal plan for a detox with recipes! Take not that this part is optional, you don’t need to do this detox or any type of diet while trying these yoga moves, it’s just a sample menu if you want to.
It has a lot o fun poses that are photograph really well and explain through-fully. This book also has a lot of 15 minute routines for any type of issue you have (even a broken heart).
It’s a really good book, even if you aren’t new to the yoga world, this book would be a really good addition to your collection. It’s one of my favorite yoga books for sure!

This is a great book!
The Intro part is very refreshing and motivate me to put my brain into that yoga spirit.
The rest of the book focus on a hundred of yoga poses. Very interesting! Then, we have plenty of little routines focusing on different subjets like: routine for the butt, for abs, for the core, for sex, etc…or simply to relax!

It’s a fun book! Your easy going yoga guide. Yoga as it is today in our modern lives. No study book or one to learn much from. Still, it’s ok!

Big Book of Yoga is right! This gorgeous edition has big, fabulous, full colour pictures that show off a variety of yoga moves / poses that beginners through to professionals will enjoy.
I found it nicely laid out with big, easy to read text, and the sections were well sign posted so that I knew what I was going to find in each one.
The author and experts featured clearly know what they’re talking about, and I found the overall tone to be very encouraging and inspirational. Before reading the Big Book of Yoga I thought yoga was just an exercise. Now I can see it’s a way of life, and it has even taught me yoga moves for getting rid of headaches, beating the bloat, aiding digestion, and ironing out soreness in my lower back after weights and body strength training.
Between this and Barbra Curie’s DVD series, I’ve got yoga covered for life!
