For decades, the diet wars have pitted advocates for the low-carb, high-fat paleo diet against advocates of the exclusively plant-based vegan diet and dozens of other diets leaving most of us bewildered and confused.
For those of us on the sidelines, trying to figure out which approach is best has been nearly impossible – both extreme diets have unique benefits and drawbacks. But how can it be, we”ve asked desperately, that our only options are bacon and butter three times a day or endless kale salads? How do we eat to reverse disease, optimal health, longevity and performance. How do we eat to reverse climate change? There must be a better way!
Fortunately, there is. With The Pegan Diet, a food is medicine approach, Mark Hyman explains how to take the best aspects of the paleo diet (good fats, limited refined carbs, limited sugar) and combine them with the vegan diet (lots and lots of fresh, healthy veggies) to create a delicious diet that is not only good for your brain and your body, but also good for the planet.
Featuring 30 recipes, and plenty of infographics illustrating the concepts, The Pegan Diet offers a balanced and easy-to-follow approach to eating that will help you get, and stay, fit, healthy, focused, and happy – for life.
”Now, more than ever, we need to utilize the power of food to help our society overcome the epidemic of chronic disease. The Pegan Diet offers an easy-to-implement solution for anyone to get started on their health journey using 21 basic principles that show how we can use food as medicine.” Arianna Huffington, Founder & CEO, Thrive Global

Many mention that the book helps them increase longevity and create a health span that is equal to their best life. However, some feel the book is not worth their time or money, with lots of wasted pages and few recipes. Reviews are mixed on the writing style, with some finding it readable and informative, while others say the recipes are a bit complicated and have too many ingredients. Soul Searching for a New Me
If you are looking for a diet book, look elsewhere. Mark Hyman offers a common sense, well researched, and not afraid to call it like it is approach to eating. I first ran into his work about 3-4 years ago after receiving abnormal lab reportsâ¦my liver enzymes were out of whack and I was so tired that I needed five 8 oz cups of morning coffee just to function each day. In my mid-50s at the time, I was mentally and physically exhausted and ready to call it a day by 3:00 p.m. I was not overweight and followed religiously what I thought was a great diet based on medically sound books from the 1990s which I discovered were now sorely outdated. An alternative medicine doc locally told to me get off of wheat and that was Step 1 in the right direction. Within 48 hours of doing so, I didnât even need coffee to get going, but I was still wiped out and doing some serious soul searching for a new me. A couple of days later, my wife and I were panning through new books at Costco. She pointed to books that she thought I might enjoy reading. I bought both of them. One of them was Food: What The Heck Should I Eat? (Hyman, 2018). That book grossly altered the way that we now think about food. (Dale Bredesenâs The End of Alzheimerâs was the other bookâ¦another excellent, different sort of read.)The Pegan Diet is a continuation of Food: What The Heck Should I Eat? – more common sense, more updates. I highly recommend both books. Three years or so after first adopting Hymanâs âfarmacyâ and âfood is medicineâ philosophy, my only wish is that we had more medical practitioners just like him. Dr. Hyman is bold, unapologetic, and very practical in what he writes. I have since read and incorporated several of his works into my daily routine. Although I continue to age, I now feel at least 20 years younger. My brain is sharp, I have amazing energy, and I no longer crash in the middle of the day. I cannot say enough!

Good info; recipes could be improved
Educational with some very good information. It would be better with recipes that use more “conventional” ingredients. Many of these would require that I drive a couple hours to get to a market that sells these esoteric ingredients.

Great book, false description. (Updated)
When I talk about false description, the product page was describing the book as new, but when I received it, the book already had some highlighted word, meaning that someone had already had the book and highlighted those words, it also had some kind of business card for some weird hospital insurance. Now, with the book. The book is great, I am learning a lot about myself (physiologically), as well as to what is not healthy for me, we have been following the recipes and I can tell that I feel better, as well as my family.Overall is a great book, only issue that I didnât get what I paid for.Update: after the seller contacted me and apologized for the issue, I was given a refund. I am changing my review to 5 stars, for how well, and professionally the issue was handled.

The Pegan Diet — it’s a lifestyle!!
Dr. Hyman’s “The Pegan Diet” book is very informative! You will NOT be disappointed with this purchase. As Dr. Hyman quickly noted, “the Pegan Diet is an un-diet — a simple set of principles blending science and common sense into guidelines promoting health, weight loss, and longevity…” I’ve listen to Dr. Hyman’s advise on healthy eating and applied it to my life for years. I’ve read a lot of health books and a ton of health and fitness articles by reputable doctors and nutritionists. If you are serious about good health — start here, start now!! This book has ALL the fundamentals and then some. Get this book and follow his recommendations. Stay healthy!!

For long-term Hyman fans: no new information
Dr. Hyman has taught me so much over the years, so I ordered his latest book immediately (I also ordered a copy for my best friend). I just finished reading it. Overall, I didn’t really learn anything new. Pretty much everything in this book is a repeat of his prior content. If you’re new to Dr. Hyman, this is a great way to dig in. But if you’ve read the other books, save your money. Also, it didn’t really seem like there was enough content here for a book – it appeared they were trying to s t r e t c h it out to be proper book length. The chapters are quite short (not a lot of detail), and the entire back half is just recipes. It felt to me like he owed his publisher a book and they just quickly cobbled this one together from prior content.A little disappointing but I’m glad he is pushing this message of food as medicine.Oh one other thing – he recommended a probiotic. I looked into it because it’s from a company I already buy supplements from. It costs $102 for a 15 day supply. That’s about $7 a day – and more than $200 a month. That is not realistic for average people, so just be aware, this entire way of living isn’t for “regular people.” I had to laugh when Dr. Hyman bragged about being able to “make it” feeding a family of 4 on a salary of $27,000 40 years ago; buddy, that’s $100K today. A less privileged way of thinking about these issues would make a lot of sense for today’s readers, I think.

Best Book about Healthy Living
One of the best & practical books about healthy living. You only have to adjust a few things in your meals & when you are eating them. For sure the 12 hour overnight fasting helps to lose weight. Reducing carbs such as bread & rice helps also. I was able to lose 4 pounds in less than 2 weeks. In less than 1 month I have lost 6 pounds & this is without much exercise.Thank you Dr. Hyman!!!

Brilliant book. I wanted a book thats going to explain to me the dos and donts to eat for optimum health and this book delivers. Its not a pushy book its simply a laid back easy read explanation of things. I took allot of tips, and their is summary after every chapter of a different topic so nothing gets read and forgotten! I highly recommend. To add im 23 and of average weight and I’ve even dropped off the weight and am now full of energy. Keep in mind a book about lifestyle change and attitudes towards eating and everyone is different so this is just a guide to finding what eating works best for your body. It’s trial and error like everything else for lasting results people!

Recomendable
