The stunning graphic novel adaptation • A must-read and collector’s item for fans of “the patron saint of feminist dystopian fiction” (New York Times).
Look for The Testaments, the sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale
In Margaret Atwood’s dystopian future, environmental disasters and declining birthrates have led to a Second American Civil War. The result is the rise of the Republic of Gilead, a totalitarian regime that enforces rigid social roles and enslaves the few remaining fertile women. Offred is one of these, a Handmaid bound to produce children for one of Gilead’s commanders. Deprived of her husband, her child, her freedom, and even her own name, Offred clings to her memories and her will to survive.
Provocative, startling, prophetic, The Handmaid’s Tale has long been a global phenomenon. With this beautiful graphic novel adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s modern classic, beautifully realized by artist Renée Nault, the terrifying reality of Gilead has been brought to vivid life like never before.

loved it
Graphic novels are a wonderful way to reread a story – itâs an art, not a comic book. This illustrator gave a wonderful interpretation of the new classic. High recommended!

Haunting artwork to match the tale
I love that they used watercolors for this graphic novel. It left the impression of the impermanence of memories when you’re recalling something and how everything is interlinked, inevitably bleeding one memory into another as you find more meaning in the whole rather than in separate instances in time. This obviously shortened version is still impactful and resonates with the current political and social climate. Glad I prefaced my reread with this visual adaptation.

Disturbing and engaging
I love this graphic novel, it’s actually quite disturbing and perfectly depicts a faithful adaptation of the novel. Effectively disturbing but addictively engaging and I pick it up from time to time.

Scary stuff
I think the thing that makes this story so scary is that you look at the state of society right now and its not to far of a stretch for something like this to take place. I enjoyed the graphic novel as it was more of a consumable bite that the novel.

NOT THE ORIGINAL
Just a warning, this is not the original novel. This is written like a comic book.I was disappointed when I opened it up to begin reading.I am returning and have ordered the original. The description is there, so in all fairness I wasn’t careful of what I ordered but just wanted to let others know as well.

Haunting
This is my first full experience ofTHT. Iâve tried to read and tried to watch. As we approach 2025 in the US and reflect on our world, this seems so much more relevant today than 9 years ago. And I am haunted into near insomnia. Wow.

Wonderful hardcover âGraphicâ Novel!
I purchased this knowing full well what a graphic novel was! I was looking forward to receiving the hardcover, and viewing the detailed art/illustrations by Renee Nault. Iâve read the book itself, listened to the Audible version and follow the series on Hulu. I like Graphic novels also. This is a fine hardcover (even The Walking Dead Compendiums are not hardcovers)!Kudos to Renée Nault on her work on this, beautiful crafted artwork, tastefully done in a world of dark times for all woman owned by Gilead. Showing light, bright and shades of dark colors all where needed within the storyline. The eyes are the windows to the soul – Human souls here showing good, bad and ones will.Itâs really easy to follow the flow of the story/illustrations, typesetting. Glad I made this purchase – looking forward to see what else Renée brings forth! Maybe the upcoming release in September of The Testaments?! Also thanks Margaret Atwood for such a great book!Nolite te bastardes carborundorum!

Not as reported
The article about the Handmaids Tale was calling it a banned book. That required me to pruchase it, have to keep banned books alive. Approximately half way into it and still hadn’t found a reason call it banned. Disappointed, set aside.
