One of the best books I’ve read.
I’ve been doing this kind of work for years. I often read books on the subject. My philosophy is always go to the foundation and strengthen it. This is the book I wish I had found when I first started—many years ago. The author distills so many foundational rules of practice that I could have highlighted the entire book! This is the book of taking academic learning and turning it into actual practice. The author appropriately balanced academic acumen with real-world implementation. I can, tomorrow, utilize what the author suggested in my “ask desk”—read the book and you’ll know what I mean. Some may say: Did you already know these things? Yes. I did. I knew them in a fashion but somewhat disconnected. This author cogently intertwines the pieces into a coherent doctrine of finely tuned presentation. I could go on and on about how great this book is. You may start to question this review. Get the book and you will know that this review is legitimate, in earnest, and from someone who does this kind of work every day!

    Wow, what a useful book!
I teach technology management courses and this book has enough ideas to power an entire semester. What I love is that the patterns go from the top level (business model) to the bottom (non-functional requirements). They are all linked together in a clear pathway. Then, this book does something I’ve never seen before – it tells the architect how to communicate the information to the executives and to the technical team. Eminently practical advice. Wow.

Good material but a bit of a slog reading cover-to-cover
The beginning of this book has some wonderful insights and perspectives on software architecture and the role in business and there really are some great patterns outlined that I’ll probably refer back to time to time, but it was quite a slog reading this cover-to-cover. I ended up skimming after I got to the 10th pattern or so. It is also aimed more at executive-level architects at more traditional businesses, so was a bit dry and stodgy in its approach. With that said, I’d recommend this to anyone who is involved in software architecture or any kind of technical business strategy, as I think it can really help level up communicating and connecting technology to the larger business.

it has some useful parts but tries to be too smart at times
It can be a useful book for new technology leaders, even seasoned executives may find interesting bits. The book tries to be too smart and complex at times, and often presents one dimensional way of looking at things.

  5. H. Thomas

    Required reading for business/enterprise architects
This book should cost a lot more! Just finished it, and there are so many good ideas about how to communicate about technology strategy. The templates are useful, but I found the guidance on how to think clearly about this complex subject most enlightening. Highly recommended for business architects!

    Fantastic book
I haven’t been so into a tech book in a long time. Thanks for making me feel smart.

What makes a good software architect?
If you are looking to make your way up to software architect and make a good strategist that book is for you

Like a handbook for my job!
A while ago my CIO thought it interesting to promote me to IT Strategy Manager. What that meant he didn’t really know, and neither did I! After some searching and seeing some pieces here and there, I stumbled upon this book.
It helps me tremendously in figuring out HOW to do what I need to. It doesn’t tell me WHAT I need to (luckily I figured that one out myself).
The book contains a lot of patterns, tips to structure information and how to communicate your findings. In itself they are not revolutionary, in fact for everyone that studied management or economics these are basic tools. But I never figured to use them in my IT job, for me this was a relevation and helped me to think more business/executive instead of technical.
I recommend this book to any technical person that somehow finds itself in his/her career at the same table as business executives.

If you work in technology, and want a great bridge into strategic analysis and planning, this book is for you.

Not sure why some people have given bad reviews, but I found this book very informative and I am a veteran in the field. If you’re looking for deep-technical discussions, of course you will not find them, because this book is meant for strategic roles, not tactical roles (only).

this book is really great . It teach you business model approach and Technology approach . One very important thing is how as technologist should communicate

  12. Hitesh Brahmbhatt

I am impressed how the elements of “business/management consulting” are cleverly and easily woven into the elements of “technology” consulting ! thank you, Eben .. I would recommend this book to anyone.

  13. Peter Smith

It’s a great book that summarizes techniques and approaches that you hopefully already know from elsewhere into a immensely useful practitioner’s package. I’d have this as must read for all of our architects.
