Wonderful Content and Strategies
I bought this to help with my state board exam that was very heavy on teaching literacy to exceptional learners. The book helped tied the gaps between literacy and special education instruction. It provided multifarious strategies to help struggling readers and research-based instructional literacy practices. Also, my exam score went up significantly after reading this book. Wonderful tool and resource for any educator to have in their library.

This book is not only for students with learning difficulties as the subtitle suggests. In fact, this should be required reading for all elementary teachers to ensure literacy proficiency for ALL students. Best suited for elementary teachers or intervention situations. The advice and strategies in this book cover all aspects of teaching early word decoding. Chapters include: Oral Langauge, Phonemic Awareness, Alphabetic Principle, Decoding, Word Patterns, Sight Words, Multisyllabic Words, Morphology, Fluency, English Language Learners, and Older Students. Overall, the information seems to be rooted in structured literacy and the science of reading. It is only the sight word chapter that I felt could have been stronger for a push towards phoneme-grapheme mapping of words instead of mostly repetition and memorization techniques. Each chapter is easy to read without being too technical or dense. Findings of recent research studies are presented throughout. Full of practical advice that can be easily implemented in the classroom or intervention settings. Instead of activities, the advice is more geared towards proper teaching procedures that make up best practices. Fully recommend.
